There's something for everyone to do in Phuket, from lounging on the beach to water sports, shopping and eating, sightseeing and island hopping.
There are several famous islands nearby which make great day trips. Phi Phi Island, where the film The Beach was made, is relaxed and laid back. Khao Phing Kan or James Bond Island, where The Man With The Golden Gun was filmed, is a more adventurous day out. Many trips explore the nearby sea caves and lagoons by canoe.
There are a few shopping malls, including Jung Ceylon in Patong and Central Festival in Kathu, these have international brand names, designer clothes and smaller Thai shops. Markets are also popular, with stalls in the tourist areas selling everything you need, from clothes to books. The weekend night market in town is huge and sells clothes, food, decorative items etc. all at much cheaper prices than on the coast.
Chalong Temple is the biggest and most ornate temple on the island. The complex has several buildings and beautiful gardens to wander around. Buddha statues are housed in the colourfully decorated golden buildings. The Big Buddha is on a hilltop in Chalong and it is well worth the winding journey up to the top. The incredible statue is gigantic and the views are just as impressive.
Eating out is a great option for night time, with restaurants serving food from all over the world. Patong has an electric buzz at night, market stalls also stay open late for shopping too. There are open-air bars all around the island that are perfect for relaxing and people-watching with a cool drink in hand. Elaborate cabarets and shows, such as Simon Cabaret and Phuket FantaSea, offer glitz, glamour and entertainment suitable for the whole family.
Thai food is characterised by the perfect balance of sweet, salty, sour and spicy. The south-east coast has a number of beach-front restaurants which serve authentic Thai food at great prices, with a beautiful view as an extra bonus. In busy tourist areas, such as Patong, Karon and Kata, head to the small streets set back from the coast for the most delicious food in tiny restaurants. In general, eat where Thai people eat for the best cuisine.
